May, ambitious law school student in Taipei City, gets a phone call from a hospital in New York City saying that her sister is in critical condition. Unwilling to involve her distanced mother, May flies to New York on her own and finds out that her sister is in a coma and just had a premature baby. After getting in touch with her sister’s previous roommate and boyfriend, May slowly realizes that her sister has an entire life that she doesn’t know about.

"Hunger Ghost Festival" is a Taiwanese festival where all ghosts visit from the underworld, and people will offer the ghosts who don't have family food and drinks. A third generation Taiwanese-American boy - James, finds the festival ceremony boring so he sneaks away from his grandma, who is devoutly religious. On the street he encounters this bizarre little boy, whom he later discovers to have some familial relationship with him.

22-year-old Jade, the daughter of 2nd generation Chinese immigrants has been obedient to her mother her whole life, that is until her mother finds out that she’s pregnant. After Jade’s mother asks her to get an abortion, Jade runs away from home to protect her baby. Jade finds herself a cheap apartment and a job in a restaurant which doesn’t last long. She gets fired from the restaurant but the manager changes her mind after she witnesses Jade hiding from her mother in the restaurant kitchen. Inspired by the manager, Jade is emboldened to go home and face her mom, as well as her deepest fear and desire for life.
